We have arrived in Vienna at 1am in the morning we went straight to our accommodation, Apartment in Erdberg is where we stayed at via Air bnb, this location is perfect as it nearby everything you need in the city, shop to buy our food to cover our 5-day trip in Vienna. Bus and train stations that is walking distance at approximately 5-10 minutes, with the cold and breezy weather it was just perfect for walking there were rent a car close by as well as churches and children parks should you wish to explore the vicinity. We did settle in and take it easy. Use this time to get accustomed to the surroundings inside the apartment as we came at 3am in the morning, we didn’t have much time to explore and see the city in bright, we did rest up for our most awaited adventure filled the next day ahead.

Vienna City Highlights and The Prater Amusement Park

In the morning we head over to St. Stephen's Cathedral (Stephansdom), one of Vienna’s most iconic landmarks. From Erdberg, it's easy to reach using public transport. We took a bus from our apartment a few minutes walk to the station,  we passed by small bakeries, coffee shops even small parks as we walked by we also noticed that there were SPAR  just across the apartment we were living in.

The closest park to St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna is Stadtpark. It's located about a 10-15 minute walk from the cathedral. Stadtpark is one of Vienna's most popular green spaces, known for its beautiful gardens and the famous statue of composer Johann Strauss. It’s a great spot to relax after exploring the bustling city center around St. Stephen's Cathedral.

After exploring the cathedral, we make our way to The Prater amusement park. It's a must-see, especially if you love thrilling rides and attractions with historical background. We enjoyed lunch in the park  tried their famous Vienna sausage hotdog and muled wine, spent the rest of the day indulging in the fun-filled activities it offers. Just a little historical snippets about why we loveeee to experience the Prater.

The Prater in Vienna is a large public park that originally served as a royal hunting ground until it was opened to the public in 1766. Today, it's one of Vienna's most popular recreational areas, offering a unique blend of attractions, natural spaces, and cultural events.

One of the oldest operating Ferris wheels in the world, constructed in 1897 to celebrate Emperor Franz Josef I's golden Jubilee. It offers a panoramic view of the city and is an iconic symbol of Vienna’s skyline. We had the best of our DIY Itinerary filled with fun and adventure we definitely cant wait to share our next adventure.

Day 2 - A Day in Semmering

The next morning, we woke up early and left our apartment in Erdberg. We rented a car to drive to Semmering, but you could also start your journey by catching a bus from Barichgasse, a tram from Löwengasse, or a train from Rennweg station. Renting a car is recommended, as buses won’t take you directly to the chalet where we spent a beautiful and unforgettable evening. Semmering, a charming town in Lower Austria, is known for its scenic mountain views, ski slopes, and hiking trails. With limited time, we wanted to explore Austria’s mountainous side, and Semmering turned out to be one of the most stunning places we've visited. I felt deeply grateful watching my children experience snow for the first time in Vienna. Seeing snow falling onto the pine trees and covering the hills was truly magical—like being inside a snow globe.

When we arrived, we checked into the family-owned Der Löffler in Semmering Hotel. The chalet was cozy, spotlessly clean, and we felt warmly welcomed by the owner.

Activities: Take a ride on the Kabinenbahn Semmering cable car for breathtaking views over the Viennese Alps. For winter sports enthusiasts, visit the family ski area in St. Corona or take the Rax family cable car (if open) for a stunning regional view. Spend the night to fully immerse yourself in the mountain experience.

Early in the morning in Semmering, we enjoyed a beautiful breakfast with a breathtaking mountain view, feeling like we had stepped into a fairytale. It was one of those rare mornings you never forget—a once-in-a-lifetime experience we’ll cherish forever. My children were delighted by the snow gently falling around the terrace, offering us the best view imaginable. The chalet owners were wonderfully generous, treating us to a fresh and hearty breakfast of eggs, toast, bacon, tomatoes, and cheeses, each bite prepared with love. This charming family business, started by their grandparents, has created a place that brings so much joy. The warmth and tradition in their chalet made us feel like we were in the best place on earth, somewhere truly unforgettable.

After breakfast, we went out to the snow, where my kids had a blast sliding and playing before we set off for Baden. This short getaway in Semmering was one of the best family trips we’ve ever had. We planned it well in advance, as the children were especially excited to go hiking.

Day 3: Family Hiking in Baden

We almost reached Baden by midday, Baden bei Wien is located in the eastern part of Austria, just south of Vienna, the capital. It’s in Lower Austria (Niederösterreich), which is the northeastern state surrounding Vienna. So while it’s not strictly in the north or south of Austria overall, it is in the southern part of the Vienna area. Baden Austria, is known for its history, natural hot springs, vineyards, and cultural heritage. Since we have traveled with our kids we have chosen to visit:

Ruine Rauheneck

Nestled on a hill overlooking the Helenental Valley, the Rauheneck Castle Ruins date back to the 12th century. A short hike leads you to the remnants of this medieval castle, where you can wander through its walls and towers while taking in breathtaking views of the valley and the Vienna Woods. We parked at the base of the hill and followed family-friendly walking trails. Although the paths up the hill were a bit steep, they were thoroughly enjoyable, and the views were spectacular. Rauheneck’s elevated position gave us chills as we approached. The experience was filled with laughter, pauses to catch our breath, and moments to savor the gusts of wind as we climbed higher.

Ruine Rauhenstein

Not far from Rauheneck, the Rauhenstein Castle Ruins are another medieval castle from the 12th century, built to protect the valley. The ruins offer scenic views, and the trails through the Helenental are ideal for a peaceful walk. Which we have never get the chance to explore due to short visit. Hence there were still lot to do if you would prefer to stay over night or two:

Beethovenhaus Baden
Visit the Beethovenhaus, a museum dedicated to Ludwig van Beethoven, who composed parts of his famous 9th Symphony here. The museum provides insights into his life and work, making it a fascinating stop for classical music enthusiasts.

Lunch in the City Center
Baden has several delightful cafés and restaurants. Enjoy lunch at a traditional Austrian café or restaurant, where you can try classic dishes like Wiener Schnitzel, Tafelspitz, or a slice of the famous Sachertorte.

Heiligenkreuz Abbey (optional)
If you have time and a car, consider a short drive to Heiligenkreuz Abbey, one of the oldest continuously occupied monasteries in the world. The abbey is known for its stunning medieval architecture and serene atmosphere.

Wine Tasting in a Local Heuriger
End your day with a wine tasting at a Heuriger, a traditional Austrian wine tavern. Baden is located in the Thermenregion, one of Austria’s premier wine regions, so this is a fantastic opportunity to try local wines such as Grüner Veltliner or Zweigelt.

Explore the Old Town and Local Shops
Wander through the charming old town, where you’ll find boutique shops, pastry stores, and traditional Austrian confectioneries. Baden’s central pedestrian streets are perfect for an evening stroll.

This itinerary balances relaxation, culture, and local flavors, an ideal way to experience Baden in just one day!

Day 4: Rathausplatz and Its Magic

On our fourth day, we returned to Vienna, and it felt extra special. We started the morning relaxing in our apartment and preparing our own breakfast. Conveniently, there was a Spar supermarket right in front of our building. My husband and I took a quick stroll across the street to pick up sausages, fresh bread, spreads, and more. The crisp November air carried a hint of winter, creating a fresh, festive atmosphere that already felt like Christmas was approaching. Cooking our own meals not only made things easier but also more affordable, especially when traveling with family. We truly enjoyed the fresh and budget-friendly groceries we found at Spar.

In the afternoon, we took a short 16-minute walk to Rathausplatz, Vienna’s City Hall. The grand square was bustling with activity and beautifully adorned with lanterns and lights, giving the city a vibrant, festive glow. Sipping mulled wine, the famous hot drink of the season, we marveled at the stunning decorations. From the illuminated bushes and trees to the glowing pathways, every corner exuded the magic of Christmas. It truly felt like we were in the Christmas capital of the world, making it an unforgettable day in Vienna.

Our visit is not complete without the experience of one of the famous Vienna’s Ice skating rink at Rathausplatz it is nothing short of magical. Set against the stunning backdrop of Vienna’s City Hall, the outdoor ice rink transforms the square into a winter wonderland. The twinkling lights, festive decorations, and cheerful music create an enchanting atmosphere that’s perfect for skaters of all ages. Whether you're gracefully gliding across the ice or wobbly but determined, the experience is unforgettable.
